Features of spinal orthoses

Spinal orthoses differ from joint orthoses in that they work not with an individual joint or limb, but with an entire section of the spine and the back muscles.

Unlike orthoses for the knee, wrist or ankle, spinal orthoses:

  • cover a larger area of the body;
  • help maintain posture and spinal alignment;
  • reduce the load on the lumbar region;
  • stabilize the back muscles;
  • distribute the load during walking, sitting and physical activity;

Types of spinal orthoses

Main types

Lumbosacral orthoses

Used to support the lower back and stabilize the lower section of the spine.

Indicated for:

Thoracolumbar orthoses

Stabilize the thoracic and lumbar sections of the spine.

Prescribed for:

  • postural disorders;
  • compression fractures;
  • recovery after injuries and surgeries.

 

Cervical orthoses

Used to stabilize and support the cervical section of the spine.

Used for:

  • neck pain;
  • after injuries and surgeries;
  • cervical vertebral instability.

Posture correctors and reclinators

Used to maintain correct positioning of the back and shoulder girdle.

Recommended for:

  • children and adolescents with postural disorders;
  • stooped posture and kyphosis;
  • prolonged sedentary work.

Rigid and hyperextension corsets

Prescribed for serious injuries, surgeries and compression damage to the spine.

Used:

  • after severe spinal injuries;
  • for compression fractures;
  • in the postoperative period.

Degrees of fixation of spinal orthoses

🟢

Soft fixation

Provides support and light stabilization.

Used for prevention and with moderate back loads.

🟡

Semi-rigid fixation

Limits a range of movements and reduces the load on the spine.

Used for: pain, spinal instability, and during the recovery period.

🔴

Rigid fixation

Maximally restricts movement.

Used: after surgeries, for fractures, and for serious spinal injuries.

How a spinal orthosis is selected

Selecting a spinal orthosis depends on a number of factors that a specialist evaluates during examination.

The selection takes into account:
