According to the Procedure for Provision of Technical Rehabilitation Devices, approved by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine on April 5, 2012, No. 321, any citizen of Ukraine is entitled to free provision of prosthetic and orthopedic devices (prosthetics and orthotics) if he or she has a referral for provision of technical and other rehabilitation devices. Foot prosthetics are nowadays optional. And there is a reason for this: a person who has undergone surgery can do without assistance at home – stand, shower and walk without a prosthesis. However, it is more difficult for a patient to walk on the street, because any unevenness affects the gait. A prosthetic foot solves this problem, as it allows a person to feel the ground under their feet, and thus gain confidence.
In addition to amputation of the foot, the removal of all or individual toes, as well as in the case of amputation of the talus and calcaneus as a whole, is a direct indication for prosthetics. In such cases, prostheses are used for wearing in ordinary shoes and walking barefoot.
The appearance and design of the prosthesis is determined primarily by the features obtained after amputation:
As you can see, after amputation, prosthetic feet are needed more for cosmetic purposes, but this is quite justified. After all, despite the fact that patients with an amputated foot can move independently, an artificial foot looks more aesthetically pleasing and gives a person self-confidence.
Moreover, after Lisfranc or Shopar operations, the prosthesis is attached with simple devices, but after the Saim and Pirogov amputations, the socket is attached under the knee, capturing almost the entire lower leg. Therefore, we advise patients with such a prosthesis to use orthopedic shoes with a special insole for the healthy limb, as it is often shorter than the one on which the prosthesis is worn.
Silicone foot prostheses are especially popular, as they look as natural as possible from an aesthetic point of view and are almost indistinguishable from a normal foot. However, such prostheses are usually made to order – the artificial foot should be similar to the preserved one in both color and shape. At the same time, functionally, such prostheses are inferior to conventional ones, because they cannot withstand a load equal to a person’s body weight. But they cope with the aesthetic function perfectly.
After taking measurements and recording the patient’s wishes, the prosthetist makes an impression of the preserved foot, then applies a thin layer of foam to it, always taking into account the length of the phalanges and their shape. This delicate work makes it possible to create prostheses that can be worn without shoes. This technology is also used to create prostheses for individual fingers.
